The US and ICC put Taliban crimes on trial. The criminals remain free
Symbolism is powerful but global impunity is unlikely to end any time soon
July 9, 2025 — Hours after the United States condemned the Taliban at the United Nations, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for two of the group’s top leaders, accusing them of crimes against humanity. The warrants underscore the gravity of Taliban abuses since their return to power in Afghanistan nearly four years ago.
But while the convergence of condemnation marks a rare moment of international consensus, it may do little to curb the Taliban’s impunity.
